Some insects thrive on our indoor plants rather than the outdoor ones because the central heating, the micro-climate and the lack of predators makes it an idyllic setting for them. When you become conscious of an infestation of these insects, you ought to take immediate action to get rid of them, before they spread to the rest of your indoor plants.

These indoor insects can breed and spread incredibly fast in the ideal conditions of your living room. One of the most common groups of indoor insect pests are the spider mites. Spider mites come in a variety of colours, depending where you live, but the most common colours are red, green and yellow.

Spider mites are very small and so not easy to see, but they can instigate the leaves to drop off your plants, which will quickly kill it. If you think that you have a problem with these spider mites, you should hold a piece of dark card under a leaf and then tap the leaf. If you have mites, some will fall onto the card.

These pests belong to the family of spiders and ticks and can be killed fairly easily with an suitable spray. Ask in your gardening centre for either a systemic insect killer or a natural method, if you would rather. The only stipulation is that you will have to act quickly, if you have them.

Shell insects are very small, but, under magnification, look like blobs of wax on the plant's stem. They are sucking the life out of you plants and they breed very quickly too, if they are left to go unchecked. These insects will not kill your plants quickly because they are after a protracted source of food, but as their numbers increase, they will ultimately kill their host. Insecticide is the only known cure for shell insects.

Mealy bugs are a lot bigger and are easily visible to the naked eye, but they do not necessarily look like animals. Instead, they look like strands of cotton in a bunch on your plant. There are two methods of dealing with mealy bugs, you can either wash them off first with water and then spray to avert a further infestation or just spray and eradicate them with the spray.

It can take a few weeks to get rid of any of these indoor insects, because they could be anywhere and there will be eggs waiting to hatch out - possibly in the pot plant's soil. Anyway, once you know that you have a problem, just stay with it until your plant recovers.

One of the first signs that you will get that you have an infestation of something is that your plant will start to look poorly and when it has recovered, you can be pretty sure that the insects have been killed too.

One thing to note here is that these pests normally only get a toehold with plants that are out of condition anyway. This frequently comes to mean that they are getting too much water, although there can be other causes also.

There are a lot of benefits to the favorite pastime of gardening. Greenhouse gardening has practically the same benefits as ordinary outdoor gardening with some differences.

by Frank Froggatt

Gardening is a pastime that has many different benefits. A lot of the benefits of regular gardening apply to greenhouse gardening as well, but there are a few differences.

It is always nice to be able to cultivate plants and a lot of people realize the importance and significance of being able to connect with nature in this manner.

If you want to get started in greenhouse gardening, a good place to get a lot of great information is from your local plant supplier or nursery.

Reasons For Greenhouse Gardening

It is related to grow in your garden and greenhouse for several reasons. Some of these reasons are that the gardener wants to grow plants for the colder seasons or climates, as storage for plants from which the gardener will get seeds from for the next planting season and housing young tender plants before replanting them on the soil. Another really great reason is that a lot of people appreciate being able to have garden greens or vegetables during the wintertime.

Greenhouse gardening is not only for vegetables and garden greens but also for ornamental plants and flowers. As storage for parent plants for the next season, greenhouses are great because they keep the plants from too much exposure to strong winds, rain and other elements. It is always good to provide your seedlings with protection from the elements while they are growing and developing in the greenhouse can provide some of the best shelter possible.

Some other reasons you might want to greenhouse garden is so that you can have a constant supply of plants for every season that arrives, and also to be able to grow different varieties of plants that might appeal to you. Growing your plants in a greenhouse takes a lot of the worry away from having your plants damaged by the elements.

Another awesome benefit is that you can't control the atmosphere specifically for sensitive plants and warm weather plants, that you are growing in cold weather. When you greenhouse garden, you not only get all the benefits listed above but you also get the added benefit of the stress relief that greenhouse gardening provides.Gardening of any sort can help to relax a person as well as give us a good enough workout.

In my humble opinion, just being able to eat and grow all of my favorite vegetables throughout the wintertime is more than enough reason to use my greenhouse. This past time or hobby is a productive one from which we can learn a lot from. Because of people's desire for organic foods, and healthy eating, greenhouse gardening is quickly developing into a favorite pastime for many many people.

With all the different shapes, sizes and types of garden greenhouses out there today, it is no wonder that some people find it very difficult to make a decision. What people sometimes forget to think about is what they are going to grow in that house.

by Ryan Summers

With all the different shapes, sizes and types of garden greenhouses out there today, it is no wonder that some people find it very difficult to make a decision. What people sometimes forget to think about is what they are going to grow in that house.

If orchids are what you will be growing, you will need to get a decent medium sized greenhouse. However, if you want to grow some small trees, i.e. lemon tree or large bushes, you will need a larger greenhouse. For some people who just want to extend the growing season of what they already have, a small portable greenhouse or cold frame may do the trick.

The next step is to evaluate where you live and determine if there are any special needs that will need to be addressed with your wonderful greenhouse. Some of those can include snow load, severe winds and cold weather. This will help you decide on any additional equipment you may need outside of the vents and fans that are required.

If you live in areas that have unusually high winds or heavy snows, make sure your greenhouse has a snow load rating that will hold up in your area or rated for high winds. You can also make sure the frame is of a good heavy duty material as well as the panels or rolls that will be the covering. Check your UV rating and see how that will affect your plants as well.

If you live in an area that has a lot of forty-five degree and below nights you will want to invest in a heater. There are electric and propane heaters available and that work very well and it just depends on whether you have an outlet close to your growing house. If you only have a few evenings that reach into these extremes, you can use five gallon buckets on water, heated by the sun, to heat the house.

Always consider your foundation and how you will tie down your greenhouse. You can purchase tie-down kits for most greenhouses and they are highly recommended for all models. For those who live in high wind areas, you may want to buy two sets of the tie-downs just to make sure. Of course, this will depend on the size, style and type of greenhouse you end up using for your family.
